Being a Busy Bum

My last entry here is dated October 26. That is like not blogging for a decade for most of the bloggers. I even missed a single blog for the month of November!

I admit that I haven't been blogging for a while.I miss my blog, my space, my crib online. I have been busy lately with so many things. My thesis has taken a lot of time from me, and I can't blame it because I am now in my crucial stage in my undergraduate life. Crucial because it is the determining factor if I will gradute or not. As of now, the College Secretary's Office of the College of Mass Communication has not released the list of candidates for graduation yet. I am not excited about it, I am more excited to graduate.

In connection to graduation (or maybe what comes after graduation), before I blog this entry, I was looking at a certain online job searching engine or a website that lets you search and apply for job. It's crazy because until now I still do not know what to do after graduation. I know that I shouldn't thik about this until I am really graduating this April but I think that I have to start searching for a job next month, this is to assure me of a job after graduation.

Anyway, LAE is coming and I am still unsure whether or not to take it this year. I was already convinced not to take it but because I still do not know what to do after graduation, taking it next month is still inviting.

Evolution of Impressions

One of the activities we had in our BC 196 or the Crisis in Broadcasting class this afternoon aside from having our free Chowking lunch care of our professor Congressman Angelo Palmones was to write our impressions on a piece of paper taped at the back of our classmates. The same routine was done as a class activity, too in my Speech Communication class in UP Baguio way back freshman year.

Can you spot some similar characteristics and descriptions during my freshman year to my senior year in college? I don't know if I have changed a lot since then but maybe there has been some evolution of impressions that took place without me noticing it.

BC WEEK

This is to inform everyone that the BC Dept. will hold its first BC Week on March 15-18, 2011.

On the first two days, March 15-16, we will hold the Student Colloquium titled Kritika: a festival of criticisms, featuring our BC Graduate and Undergraduate students' researches to be presented by members of the classes of Dr. Eli Guieb, Prof. Josefina Santos and Mr. Choy Pangilinan. Respective reactors from CMC, CAL and CSSP will also be part of the colloquium. This event will be held at theCMC Auditorium and subsequent simultaneous sessions at the Media Center BC Seminar Room. This colloquium is the precursor to the envisioned The Cheche Lazaro Lecture Series.

On March 17, the UP Cyberdwende Website will be launched by the Internet Communication Studies (Com 150) class of Prof. Data Canlas at 10.30am at the Broadcast Viewing Room. In the afternoon, the UPTV Online will have its premiere showing of several films collectively titled:Virgins vs. Aliens. UPTV Online is an annual project of the classes of Prof. Jane Vinculado and BC lecturer Dexter Mantes.

On March 18, the BC 122 (Scriptwriting) class of Dr. Eli Guieb will launch the first ever book on scriptwriting by the broadcast students called 122: Antolohiya ng mga teleplay at the CMC TV studio at 2.00pm.

Immediately following this book launch is the world premiere of several videos by the BC 160 (Broadcasting and Development) and the BC 197 (Ethnographic Videography) classes of Dr. Eli Guieb, also at the TV studio.

We invite you, your faculty, students, and staff to these events.

As a culminating activity for the broadcast majors, we hope to institutionalize the Broadcast Communication Week every year to close the academic year.

Please help us disseminate these event to others.

USC and CMC-SC Elections 2011

I just casted my vote this morning. First thing I did upon arriving at the College of Mass Communication. I did not vote for a straight slate. I voted for people who I think deserve the position they are running for. Being a person who has been exposed in politics since childhood, I voted for people who really care for the students and not for individuals who just seek the office only to protect their party's name.

I opted to abstain in some positions in the college-level. It's also a mix party for me. Though, it's dominated by a particular party which I prefer not to mention. I just hope the winners for the posts will really serve the students and should not only know the real world outside the university but also the world within the college.

Valentine's Day with friends

Since I needed to be in school today for a meeting with my groupmate in a report, I was not able to spend this supposed romantic day of the year. So thankfully my friends from UP Baguio was here today and researched at the CMC Library for their thesis. Carmi and Lyle were two of my best girl friends in UPB even when I was still a freshie. Well, back when we were freshie. They were my block mates then.

I was late to arrive at the library because I still came from a 5-AM trip from Pangasinan and that I arrived here past 10 in the morning. I took a cab from Quezon Ave to UP for a faster ride. Then off to CMC.
I find it cool that Lyle and I have the color of shirts, purple!

After doing some paper stuff at the library, we walked from CMC to the Shopping Center. Ate lunch at Rodics. Gave them flowers and strawberry shakes. I told them that I brought Baguio in Diliman with the roses and strawberry. They found it sweet.

They found my jokes corny and greeny, too. They were in a rush since they still have a rehearsal in Baguio in the afternoon.

I might not spend this day with the person I love, at least I got to spend it with the people I missed and love! I am planning the perfect date for me and the person I love. But I hope she won't read this so that it will remain a surprise.

Hot off the Grill: The USC and CMC-SC candidates' face-off

The candidates for this year's University and college-wide elections had the chance to present themselves to the students of the College of Mass Communication this afternoon during 'Hot Off the Grill' a candidates's forum presented by the UP Mass Communicators' Organization.

UNIVERSITY-WIDE
Since I was not able to attend the meeting-de-avanse held at my dormitory, the Ipil Residence Hall, I was craving to meet these candidates. Though I was really not expecting these three political parties to be in there, all the time I thought it was only the college-based candidates who will face it off, so I wore a blue top.

Anyway, it cannot be denied that the CMC is a red-dominated college. Almost all the students herein are active with national and university issues that affect students. And maybe because the STAND-UP has a college-based party in CMC.

Alyansa, Kaisa, and STAND-UP had their own gimmicks in presenting their platforms and their slate. STAND-UP's platforms revolve mostly on the issues and I was not able to decipher their plans straightly unlike the two parties. I just found out their offers by reading their leaflets of GPOA.

Alyansa had most of their councilors present while Kaisa had the least number of attendees to the event. I am still not decided whom to vote for but one thing for sure, my ballot will be of mix parties and I won't stick to only one party.

COLLEGE-BASED
Interdependent Student Activism or ISA and the Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP- CMC have battled it up for the CMC-SC. The debate was great, it was indeed HOTTT!
I already have my Chairperson, however I still do not have a Vice Chairperson just as yet. My ballot for this will include candidates from the two parties and will not stick to one. I believe that some people in the other party deserve to win.

I have to give merit to the both party for giving us a nice show and it was indeed enlightening. I learned more about the politics within the college, the personalities of these peoples, and the college itself.

I just have to decipher more if these people deserve the positions they are aiming to have.



 

Second Day of the Second Semester

Today was the second day of second semester and what made me excited are my professors. I have 1 to 7 PM classes today and thank God I have not-so-cruel professors, or maybe it's just me thinking they are not cruel.

In my first class which is Comm 120 or the Law on Mass Media, I had my first encounter with the professor Atty. Marichu C. Lambino and some of my classmates. She really looks like Korina Sanchez in person. She asked us to choose our own case among the 31 cases in the syllabus. I chose the case about orgy. :) She asked the class if we know the meaning of that word. And majority knew the answer. She looked at me and it kind of like asking "tell me the meaning", so I answered that it is a sexual intercourse involving three and more individuals. She smiled, and it is kind of of like saying to me, "how the hell these kids know that word." I just smiled. :) She dismissed the class early. The supposed 1-4 PM class was dismissed at 2 PM.

So while I was waiting for my next class, I decided not to waste time and just went to the OUR and paid my AdMat form, if you can still recall my earlier post that I added a PE class to my schedule. So I stayed there for an hour.

Upon arriving to CMC, I immediately went to the cafeteria and ate a BIG snacks. Yes, i spend almost a hundred pesos just for snacks. Well, that is to ensure that I will not be sleepy for my 4-7 PM class. I have had classes during my second year in CMC and I found out that the 4-7 class is boring. Thank God I have a better professor now.

My second class this day was BC 182 or the Broadcast Audience Research class. It was fun because Prof. Jun Austria is the professor. He asked us to read two looooong articles and asked us to formulate questions about the articles we read. I made eight questions but only read seven wherein one was rejected. The purpose of the activity is to determine if we already know how to formulate questions since the course is about knowing how to make good questions for the audience.

I am unhappy knowing that I was not appointed as the secretary of the class, another guy raised his hand faster than me. Haha, sooo high school, right? But I am collecting all my classmates' e-mails and making it as a habit to keep the papers in a folder and make them as souvenir, so that when one of my classmates becomes famous, I have an evidence that he or she has been my classmate. LOL

Anyway, junks of reading materials await me this semester. I hope I keep my sanity on these subjects.

CWTS Symposium: Break Glass in Case of Emergency

       The Philippines, being an archipelago and belonging to the Pacific Ring of Fire, is subjected to a lot of natural hazards such as tropical storms, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.  Another factor that contributes to the disasters that struck our country is the lack of discipline among Filipinos that result to man-made hazards such as food-poisoning, environmental pollution, and road accidents. One question that we must ask ourselves is how we can be ready if hazards struck the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. 

            The seminar that the class conducted on September 30,2010  at the CMC Auditorium as project was really essential for it did help us to understand the paradigms of disasters from different perspectives since we have speakers from the geological sciences, from food science, and from communication science in application to UP Diliman campus and students herein. 

            The welcome remarks of the College Secretary of the College of Mass Communication, Professor Danilo A. Arao was interesting. He said that such undertaking is a significant move towards the campaign on disaster awareness and preparedness in the campus which students can apply outside the campus if they graduate since hazards do not have fixed time when they will occur.

            Dr. Santiago’s message informed the audiences on what they can expect from the seminar and also introduced the speakers. I really liked it because madam’s better half Sir Ramon J. Santiago is so supportive to ma’am and also to the class. Maybe without sir Santiago’s friends self efforts, we would not have conducted such a seminar.

            The first speaker is the Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Dr. Rene Solidum. He talked about earthquake preparedness or the things that we should do before, during, and after an earthquake. I like his argument that preparing for an earthquake is not like preparing for a typhoon wherein the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) can give typhoon signals for the people to be ready for possible flood if their area is prone to flood. Preparing for earthquake is being aware all the time of the positions of things in relation to you. It was interesting how he said that my position, as the master of the ceremony in the event, was not a safe spot in case there is an earthquake, he rather went beside a strong post which is like one of the pillars of the building.

            I am grateful how PHIVOLCS actively participated in the event. They even provided leaflets and brochures on the things that students can do in case of emergency. I am sure that a lot of students who attended were given such and that they are more aware now on the things that they can do in case of this calamity occur. I hope we can disseminate more of these leaflets and brochures to more students in the campus since students here are coming from different parts of the country, the information that they have acquired can then be transmitted to their areas.

            Our second speaker Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco Lagmay of the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences talked about the Faults of UP and the Geological Profile of the university. One fact that I learned from him is that the rumour of UP Main Library having fault beneath it is untrue. I was amazed on how the architectural landscape beneath the university is planned. It’s like it was really strategically built for instance the path that lead to the water basin towards Commonwealth Avenue from the university. That must have been built for years and in the 102 years of UP, when was those built?  UP keeps on amazing me.  

            The third speaker was Dr. Leonora Francisco of the UP College of Home Economics and talked about the Disasters in Food which is all about food poisoning that can be classified into man-made hazards. It was interesting that Dr. Francisco had a very different framework but it was still significant because she presented a daily threat that might harm UP Diliman students, particularly on street foods such as isaw, fishballs, and others.  I learned that the foods that are sold on streets should be properly covered since it is exposed to the surroundings. She did a comparative analysis on the street foods before and its current situation. She said that the foods sold on the street now are more hygienic and safer than the years before since they now have sauce dispenser unlike before that the sauce are open. I also learned that foods should be exposed in a different temperature immediately so that bacteria will not be exposed to bacteria. All this time I thought that that practice is wrong since it might lead to fast rottenning of food but I must trust her since she had studies about this.

            The fourth and the final speaker was the Chairperson of the Communication Research Department of the UP College of Mass Communication, Dr. Elena E. Pernia who talked about the Disaster Rick Communication. I learned that it is difficult really how to properly communicate about disasters. And Dr. Pernia emphasized that ‘there is no good news here.’ And I think it is true, based on my experience before, during a calamity it is really hard to be vocal about it and to properly communicate your ideas especially if you are surrounded by the affected individuals. Dr. Pernia said that what matters most in such situation is to show that you care towards people especially if they have been affected.

            Applying the Disaster Risk Communication in the Hostage Crisis on August 23, 2010 at the Quirino Grandstand, the police have given too much care to their fellow Filipino General Mendoza and they gave everything he demanded. I think the police should have cared more on a number of lives that was at risk at that time. Though media kept on exposing the latest happening that have caused the hostage taker to be informed on the tactics and aggregated information with what the police did to his brother.  Disaster Risk Communication must be emphasised in institutions like the police and the military since they are vital in the protection of the Filipinos in case of hazards and disasters.

            I initially thought it would not have been possible to conduct such project for a lot of time will be needed to organize and to invite speakers. Luckily, this assumption was wrong for all the speakers were in the seminar and students from different colleges such as the College of Science and the School of Statistics attended it. It felt sad by the fact that our online campaign was not really valued and the guests who confirmed their attendance online did not attend the event. 

            On the lighter side, I am happy being part of this team who conducted the first seminar on such topic here in the UP Diliman, as what Dr. Solidum said. A fellow student from DZUP told me if she can interview me and I said yes. While we waited for the call, she asked me if it was really set on this day because it was in a week wherein we commemorate the first anniversary of the Typhoon Ondoy wherein a lot have died. And I said no, but it was a point that the seminar landed on this date since the seminar is about disaster awareness and preparedness, if a lot have been informed and are aware, we might lessen the number of affected individuals and casualties in case of such incidents.

UP students and even professors can wear whatever they want to wear even slippers- one thing that most of the schools in the country does not allow.
Also, UP students are known for 'taking the road less traveled by' for they make their new way and they do not conform.

In a class right now

I am having my BC 148 or my Interactive Broadcasting class right now.
We have just finished shooting our first activity! And I am going to upload them later, or maybe after editing it.
My professor is so cool, well, aside from the fact that she is so pretty, (crush, crush!) and she got an awesome smile!
We are still thinking of our blog name, I mean the name of our class blog where we will upload our videos.

No time

You might have noticed how I became inactive these days in Facebook, it is because of the time constraints I am facing with my busy acad life. LOL. Well, it is really the fault of my new dormitory! Haha. I do not have an internet connection at my room and I have to get outside my bedroom just to access the wifi connection. Imagine that. I have to amke sure that my battery is full before going out since I do not want to get back to my room just to recharge my laptop and wait until it's fully charged. I think it's just a waste of time. I'd better sleep. But since I need to keep updated with the internet and web world, I need to be online often! Thanks to my BC148 class or my Interactive Broadcasting class! Thanks Ma'am Data! :)


Now I know I am really left our when it comes to Glee. LOL!

INTERACTIVE BROADCASTING

I am so amazed about my class this afternoon. It's about interactive broadcasting. Yes, it is a production class though not a studio-prod class. We'll do shoots outside the classroom, yeah! Now I am excited for that!


Anyway, the class deals on new media- the internet and the web! We were required to have our own youtube channels, which I already have. And also to have our blog sites. What made me more excited is on the challenge imposed by Prof. Data Canlas, wherein we should get into the mainstream media as the sem ends. Now, that's tough. We hope our project be aired on the mainstream news!!!


One more super cool thing about the class, Jason Laxamana is my classmate! Yes, the director in Youtube whom I adore because of his idealistic Kapampangan short films. Because of him I also wanted that our province will also have short films in our own language. 

Planned

This morning, I immediately computed how much my tuition and all my expenses will be for the upcoming enrollment for the first semester in the school year 2010-2011. Then I also made a draft of all the subjects that I will take in my entire duration in UP Diliman's program, BA in Broadcast Communication.


If I did take summer classes last summer, my load will be better but considering that I love my dad I did not take it. I thought it will be just fine. 


Now I already know how many units that I will take in the succeeding semesters. I just hope I can follow them.

What ifs

Why did I look at the list of successful shieftees/transferees at that college's website.
It made me so envious looking at one of the names there.
I know her, she is not your typical girl in my place.
Now, it made me think, what if I also applied to shift in that college since my parents wanted me to take a business course.


What if I applied and got accepted to CBA: Aldrin will be..
     - 2nd year standing.
     - BA BroadComm will not be my course anymore, definitely.
     - I still need to work for and process my papers, making it hard for me to bid goodbye to CMC, since if I 
        applied without telling them beforehand that I shifted in that college.
     - I will be facing heavy Math subjects including 17 and 100, the only math courses in CBA, not including 
        Stat 100.
     - My parents will be happy since that is their "real dream" for me, to graduate with a business degree.
     - I will graduate NOT ON TIME, since I will be back to sophomore standing.


What if I did apply and not accepted:
     - If CMC found it out, I will be NON-MAJOR. Disqualify me to graduate with honors.
     - My parents would be really disappointed and be upset with me.
     - I will have a blurry future? I do not think so though.
     - Some may laugh at me, judging me as a LOSER and all.
     - I will really be a bullshit. 




So, since I am an incoming junior BA Broadcast Communication student, what will happen to me for the next school year? 


Why is it hard for me to be contented on what I already have?
